It’s an exciting Monday as The Counter Burger opens up at the Westcliff Plaza on 17th & Irvine on Monday. Bringing in a top notch, any burger the way you want it will be an exciting thing. The only other Orange County location for Counter Burger is Irvine and tests over the weekend seemed positive. Congrats to them and we’ll have pictures on Monday.

We had a chance today to check out Costa Mesa’s newest Mexican restaurant, Cafe Rio. Cafe Rio is located on 17th street where it faces a number of local mexican food competitors including Los Primas, MiCasa, Caliente, and others. Does it hold up?
We walked in Cafe Rio and see an almost “chain” feel to the place. Lots of lights, seats, and a feed line essentially fills the place. No menu’s to be seen until you get in line and at that, you only see the menu after glancing to your left. We decided to order a fire grilled steak burrito and chips & salsa to try it out. A cheesy feeling filled the room as the staff yelled “first timer” to the group ahead of us. This is what we despise about Fatburger and didn’t start this trip out right. We ordered the steak burrito to find out it would be 2-3 minutes so we switched to the pork burrito covered in enchilada sauce and cheese. A generous amount of chips and a mediocre salsa was included. Price for that with a large drink? $13. Was the food worth it? Not really in our minds. The burrito tasted fine but it turned the burrito into a soupy mess and didn’t offer any stability to it. We almost had to use a spoon to eat the burrito but the pork was pretty good. The steak nachos beside our table might lead us back to a second visit to Cafe Rio, but Caliente in the same mall was a better option for us. Even a steady contender like Taco Mesa or Taco Rosa could overshadow Cafe Rio in our minds
Overall, it’s a decent chain restaurant, but overpriced. Rated the best mexican food by a PR firm in a highly ethnic area makes it a tough entrant to the mexican restaurant culture. Maybe in Omaha or Reno, but doesn’t come close in Costa Mesa.
